  • One of our true passions at reform is preserving quality architecture by restoring and renovating beautiful homes that might otherwise be torn down or demolished. More often than not, with a bit of love and creativity, these houses can continue to serve the lives of their occupants and their neighborhoods for decades to come.

This mid-century modern home in the Luxmanor neighborhood of North Bethesda serves as a prime example of the ways in which the creative application of a few new materials and some small but innovative additions can have a huge impact on the curb appeal and function of an existing house.

The design for this house expanded the existing structure on both sides by carefully mimicking the trademark mid-century modern low slope roof. The garage addition on one side has the roof fold down to create a back wall which shields the courtyard an entry of the house from the adjacent property. A lofted roof that sits atop three large clerestory windows allows ample light to filter into the updated primary bedroom and walk-in closet.

A new mudroom with custom-built coat, shoe and backpack storage connects the garage to a large open kitchen with an expansive island, breakfast nook and new dining room. Other features of the renovation include a custom designed and fabricated walnut vanity in the primary bathroom and showers with custom tiling and dramatic back-lit niches. A generous, tiered deck overlooks the expansive rear yard and provides a natural connection with the walk-out basement level below.
